Getting Older = Getting Better!

It is a frightening feeling to wake up one morning and discover that we are getting older. We sometime don’t recognize ourselves! When one day we look in the mirror and think we are opening up the front door and asking “can I help you”?

It seems like inside every older person is a younger person wondering what happened! But, age is definitely a state of mind. Whatever your age may be, you can still remain a child at heart. While for some aging is synonymous with dread and foreboding, for some it is merely a number. The latter choose to look at old age as just another phase of life.

At age 20, we worry about what others think of us. At age 40, we don’t care what they think of us. At age 60, we discover they haven’t been thinking about us at all. Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter. We are always the same age within us.

There is a fountain of youth inside of us. It is our mind, our talents, our creativity and the love we bring to life all around us. Aging is not lost youth, but a new stage of opportunity and strength. The older we get, the more aware we become. Life humbles us so deeply as we age as we realize how much nonsense we’ve wasted our time on.

Here a few humorous quotes on aging:

  • After 60, our body has a mind of its own. It breaks up with our brain.
  • Middle age is when your age starts to show around the middle.
  • 65 is when you finally get your head together and your body starts to fall apart.
  • You know you are getting older when you stoop down to tie your shoelaces and wonder what else you could do while you’re down there.
  • The older we get, the few things seem worth waiting in line for.
  • Time might be a great healer, but it’s a lousy beautician.
  • By the time you are 80 years old, you’ve learned everything. You only have to remember it all.
  • You know you are getting older when everything seems to dry up or leaks.
  • I’ve reached an age where my train of thought often leaves the station without me.
  • You know that you are getting older when it feels like the morning after, but there was no night before.
  • Senility Prayer: God, please grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyways, the good fortune to run into the ones I do like, and the eyesight to tell the difference.
  • Remember when shake, rattle and roll meant more than just getting out of bed?
  • Getting lucky is finding my car in the parking lot.
  • I do pole-dancing daily, everytime I have a bath.
  • I still have a full deck, I just shuffle slower now.

And a lovely poem written by an elderly lady:

I am strong because I know my weakness, I am compassionate because I have suffered, I am alive because I am a fighter, I am wise because I have been foolish, I can laugh because I have known sadness, I can love because I have known loss. I am a strong woman who has weathered the storm, but still loves to dance in the rain.

As we age, we might not be able to go back and change our beginning, but we can continue where we are and change our ending. And, it’s always better to grow older with a sense of humour, than to grow old with no sense at all. Let’s celebrate the years we have endured and the years still to come. We might be getting older, but we’re still just as fabulous!

Getting older doesn’t mean we have to grow up. We can still do silly things, just slower. We can happily get away with just about anything. We need to celebrate the life we have lived so far and look forward to what we have yet to experience.

Remember, we might not be a spring chicken anymore, but we are now, a well seasoned Hen.
