Text Abreviations – New Language

I admit that I have not taken the time to be educated in using the expanding abbreviations (abbr.) that are commonly used in our texting messages. I anticipate that creative texting abbreviations will continue to be developed as an effective way to save time and space when writing. They certainly allow the reader to easily interpret the words when they are repeated in an abbreviated form.

I guess my main concern is that I hope that the use of abbreviations isn’t adopted in our real face to face conversations. I don’t want to be “re-educated”. I also know I experience memory lapses and I can foresee confusing others because I have misused an attempted abbreviation in my responses. Of greatest concern is that it would probably convey a sign that I have “lost my marbles”.

Suffice it to say that I don’t want to remove the enjoyment of talking and have it become a constant memory challenge that handicaps my ability to be able to spontaneously express “full word” responses. Text abbreviations are in a sense mutations of the English language. As more are thought up I can foresee our chats being dominated with abbreviations.

Following are a few examples of popular abbreviations in texting that I have dug up out of curiosity. However I would stress that I have no intention of testing my memory to use them. (LOL) – I already know one! 😉

I can foresee different meanings being created from the same letters which could unintentionally upset relationships with family, spouse and friends! (DYDI – Don’t you do it). Oops, I’m hooked already! (HAH – Health and happiness)! Yes, I can see how fun this can be! Enjoy! 😀
