Uncommon Sense

Throughout our life we continue to soak up knowledge and a host of experiences that teach us to naturally apply common sense in our behavior and our many personal decisions and reactions. The use of our common sense allows for plain understanding and the ability to make reasonable decisions and judgments in our daily lives.

However, it is also generally true that we all sometimes say and do things that indicate we may be displaying a little uncommon sense. For non-seniors this is usually a conscious effort that is intended to be funny and amuse others. However, as seniors we are able to unconsciously display much more uncommon sense. This allows us to say and do amusing things without deliberately trying to be funny.

As we progress through our senior years I believe we learn to adapt and more naturally enjoy our increasing uncommon sense. It provides us with a different perspective of life that we can generously mix with our sometimes boring common sense. Our natural and honest displays of uncommon sense actually provide us with some healthy benefits.

In particular, the more we think and act outside the common sense box, the more smiles and laughter we generate. The medical professionals say this amusing behavior is good for our mental, physical and emotionally well-being. Moreover, it helps us to develop more entertaining facial wrinkles.

Following are a few uncommon sense examples of why seniors behave in sometimes funny and sometimes philosophical ways:
(1) When I am alone I always find my amusing friend by looking in the mirror.
(2) As we age we appreciate the experience and the wisdom we have acquired. Our real problem is we that we have difficulty using it because we have memory lapses.
(3) Often we don’t feel anything until noon and then get up to have a late breakfast. Then it’s time to have our afternoon nap before we can enjoy our late lunch. Then we often start dozing while watching TV and have to go to bed and forget supper.
(4) As seniors we realize that today is the oldest day of our life but it is also the youngest we will ever be again. That’s why we try to celebrate every day.
(5) After a nights sleep, I usually encounter unexpected surprises in the morning. Then I experience more unplanned surprises in the the afternoon. ln the afternoon I begin to speculate on what surprises will greet me in the evening. This has given me reason to begin to host daily surprise parties and eat cake.
(6) You will never grow old as long as you allow your love of life to persevere. This enables you to use uncommon sense to enjoy being happy, thoughtful and caring.
(7) Aging does not mean we have to stop living and doing the things we used to do. It simply means we are entering a new phase of life where we can allow our matured mind, body and emotions to adapt and enjoy the “new norm” that surrounds us.
(8) Life is like a private, healthy orchard bearing delicious fruits. These fruits are filled with a variety of wonderful tastes such as love, laughter, caring and dreams. As long as we continue to nourish, share and give daily thanks for these blessings we will never allow aging to become a reason to allow our orchard to cease thriving.
(9) Aging can be a continuing challenge of mind over matter. We should never allow our mind to let our aging limitations negatively influence our positive outlook. We should always continue to optimize our daily joys and maintain our fountain of youth.
(10) I have reached the age where I am told the candles cost more than the cake.
