As we age, our perspective changes on how we exercise and continue to enjoy different learning from our daily experiences. I think this is because we are blessed to become more tolerant and patient and have the time to recognize the real benefits of our occasional shortcomings and mishaps. This allows us to laugh more at ourselves and convert negative reactions into amusing experiences.
Following are a few examples of the extended learning experiences that have been provided to seniors.
Memory Lapses:
Most seniors don’t get enough exercise. Therefore in His wisdom, God has arranged that we have more memory lapses. This means that when we have to search for our glasses, our key chain, the remote TV control, our cell phone and an array of other items we may have misplaced, we are enjoying more exercise benefits.
Coordination:
In His wisdom, God has allowed us to lose our coordination. This means that when we drop things, knock things over or spill things we then have to bend, reach, stretch or even undergo clean up efforts as part of our recovery actions. This helps us to practice coordinating our legs, arms, hands and fingers.
Calls of Nature:
In His wisdom. God altered our bladders. This means that we have additional calls of nature to make more trips to the loo. This provides us with more exercise. However, we must admit that we don’t really like being wakened from a sound sleep because our bladder has developed the ability to become an alarm clock.
Technology Lesson:
It is interesting to translate the old adage that if you give a person a fish you can satisfy their hunger needs for a day. However, we now understand it has been replaced by a modern adage. It says that if you teach a person to use the internet they won’t bother you for a few hours, maybe for a day, perhaps a week or even a month as long as they can order some on-line delivered meals, have a a supply of pickies to nibble on and have a TV nearby as a viewing option.
Brain Cramp Lessons:
Most seniors still have an active social life when they take into account their different health clinic visits. Also counted is the preparation time involved in getting ready to use their car and go out shopping for a couple of items that they have remembered to note on their reliable “to do” pocket pad. These outgoing social preparations include remembering the following important things e.g. – deciding what to wear – taking our vitamins and prescriptions – inserting false teeth – locating eye glasses – finding a wrist watch – searching for the cell phone – retrieving a misplaced wallet – and then looking for their key chain. Being able to successfully complete these necessary preparations always generates a sigh of relief and a satisfied smile. In the winter, it is also critical to remember to disconnect the block heater cord before leaving their reserved outdoor parking spot. It is than safe to leave and focus on the best route to take which requires another peak at the shopping list. Sometimes to their dismay they realize they forgot their “to do” pocket pad. Wow, don’t senior years enjoy lots of learning and physical and mental stimulants!
